Scholarships and Financial Aid
Scholarship Search Sites
There are numerous sites for searching national scholarships. A few options are listed below. Typically, these sites require registration and will allow students to narrow down scholarships based on various criteria. Remember that these sites should always be free.
We suggest that students/parents set up extra free email accounts to use when registering for any search site. It is helpful for some families to set up an account to which both the parents and the student have access. You are likely to get a large amount of email that you may not wish to fill your regular inbox.
Federal Student Aid for Grants and Loans
The primary purpose of the FAFSA is to determine how much financial aid a student qualifies for, including both need-based and non-need-based aid. It determines eligibility for federal need-based grants, including the Pell Grant and Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (FSEOG); subsidized federal student loans, which are based on need; unsubsidized federal student loans, which most students qualify for regardless of need; federal work-study; state-based financial aid, including grants, scholarships, and loans; school-based financial aid, including need-based grants and scholarships, and school-based merit aid (since many schools require the FAFSA to be on file before any aid awards are distributed).
CSS Profile
The CSS Profile is an online application used by some colleges and scholarship programs to award non-federal institutional aid. Check your colleges’ information to determine whether they require the CSS Profile. A list of participating schools is available here. Some schools may also require divorced or separated parents to complete separate applications.
For federal aid you must complete the FAFSA. For more information regarding the FAFSA, see the Federal Student Aid section above.
