Alabama High School Graduation Requirements

Documents pertaining to the Alabama high school graduation requirements can be found on the Alabama State Department of Education website at Alabama Graduation Requirements - Alabama State Department of Education.

The Alabama State Department of Education has established four pathways to earning an Alabama High School Diploma.

  • General Pathway – This is the most common pathway used by students to complete the requirements for graduation. Also referred to as Option A.
  • Workforce Pathway – This pathway was introduced in 2025 and is designed to meet the needs of students planning to join the workforce immediately after high school. Also referred to as Option B.
  • Essentials Pathway – This pathway is available to students with documented disabilities at the recommendation of the IEP Team.
  • Alternate Achievement Standards Pathway – This pathway is available to students with documented disabilities at the recommendation of the IEP Team. 
  • The General Pathway is the default option for the majority of our students. Exceptions may include some students with IEPs who have been placed on either the Essentials Pathway or the Alternate Achievement Pathway by their IEP teams.

    Credit Requirements:

    • 4 credits English
    • 4 credits Math – must include Geometry with Data Analysis, Algebra I with Probability, Algebra II with Statistics, and at least one other ALSDE approved math course
      • Students who successfully complete Accelerated Math 7 and Accelerated Math 8 may replace Algebra I with Probablility with another ALSDE approved math course. This is usually an upper-level Advanced Placement (AP) course.
    • 4 credits Science – must include Biology and a physical science
      • Physical science courses at MHS include Physical Science, Chemistry, Honors Chemistry, and Honors Physics.
    • 4 credits Social Studies – World History, U.S. History I, U.S. History II, and U.S. Government/Economics
    • 1 credit Beginning Kinesiology (P.E.) or other approved course (ex., Athletics, JROTC, or Marching Band)
    • 0.5 credit Health
    • 1 credit Career Preparedness – This course incorporates the Financial Literacy Exam and Online Experience requirements.
    • 3 credits in Career-Technical Education, Arts Education, and/or Foreign Language
    • All remaining credits earned count toward the elective credit requirement.
    • A minimum of 24 total earned credits are required per the Alabama State Department of Education.

    Non-Credit Requirements:

    • Successful completion of the Financial Literacy Exam as a part of the Career Preparedness course.
    • Online Experience requirement is provided through the Career Preparedness course.
    • Successful completion/passing score on the Civics Exam (usually taken through the U.S. Goverment or Economics course).
    • Completion of the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) or FAFSA Non-Participation Waiver during senior year.
    • Earn one or more of the College and Career Ready Indicators approved by the Alabama State Board of Education.
  • St. Clair County Schools process for moving from the General Pathway to the Workforce Pathway:

    Students interested in the Workforce Pathway must schedule an appointment with their parent, school counselor, and an administrator to discuss the requirements and implications of choosing this pathway. These appointments may be held at the end of the 2nd semester of their sophomore or junior year. If the student has an IEP or IELP, the team will need to meet to come to a consensus.

    Credit Requirements:

    • 4 credits English
    • 2 credits Math – must include Geometry with Data Analysis and Algebra I with Probability
    • 2 credits Science – must include Biology and a physical science
      • Physical science courses at MHS include Physical Science, Chemistry, Honors Chemistry, and Honors Physics.
    • 4 credits Social Studies – World History, U.S. History I, U.S. History II, and U.S. Government/Economics
    • 1 credit Beginning Kinesiology (P.E.) or other approved course (ex., Athletics, JROTC, or Marching Band)
    • 0.5 credit Health
    • 1 credit Career Preparedness – This course incorporates the Financial Literacy Exam and Online Experience requirements.
    • 3 credits in Career-Technical Education – Credits must be earned from an approved CTE Program of Study, resulting in CTE Completer status.
    • All remaining credits earned count toward the elective credit requirement. Workforce Pathway students are encouraged to take additional math, science, and/or Career-Technical courses as appropriate for them.
    • A minimum of 24 total earned credits are required per the Alabama State Department of Education.

    Non-Credit Requirements:

    • Successful completion of the Financial Literacy Exam as a part of the Career Preparedness course.
    • Online Experience requirement is provided through the Career Preparedness course.
    • Successful completion/passing score on the Civics Exam (usually taken through the U.S. Goverment or Economics course).
    • Completion of the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) or FAFSA Non-Participation Waiver during senior year.
    • Earn one or more of the College and Career Ready Indicators approved by the Alabama State Board of Education.
  • The Essentials Pathway is an option for some students with active IEPs who have been placed on the pathway by their IEP teams.

    Credit Requirements:

    • 4 credits English with Essentials Pathway courses as appropriate
    • 4 credits Math – must include Geometry with Data Analysis, Algebra I with Probability, Algebra II with Statistics, and at least one other ALSDE approved math course with Essentials Pathway courses as appropriate
    • 4 credits Science – must include Biology and a physical science with Essentials Pathway courses as appropriate
    • 4 credits Social Studies – World History, U.S. History I, U.S. History II, and U.S. Government/Economics with Essentials Pathway courses as appropriate
    • 1 credit Beginning Kinesiology (P.E.) or other approved course (ex., Athletics, JROTC, or Marching Band)
    • 0.5 credit Health
    • 1 credit Career Preparedness – This course incorporates the Financial Literacy Exam and Online Experience requirements.
    • 2 credits Career-Technical Education in a sequence (two courses from the same CTE program of study)
    • 1 credit Workforce Readiness – This course is typically taken in 12th grade.
    • 1 credit Cooperative Education or Essentials Career Preparation – This course is typically taken in 12th grade.
    • All remaining credits earned count toward the elective credit requirement.
    • A minimum of 24 total earned credits are required per the Alabama State Department of Education.

    Non-Credit Requirements:

    • Successful completion of the Financial Literacy Exam as a part of the Career Preparedness course.
    • Online Experience requirement is provided through the Career Preparedness course.
    • Successful completion/passing score on the Civics Exam (usually taken through the U.S. Goverment or Economics course).
    • Completion of the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) or FAFSA Non-Participation Waiver during senior year.
  • The Alternate Achievement Standards (AAS) Pathway is limited to students with a significant cognitive disability with active IEPs who have been placed on the pathway by their IEP teams. Since the content of Alternate Achievement Standards (AAS) Pathway courses is not fully aligned to the Alabama Courses of Study, this diploma pathway will prepare a student for supported, competitive employment and supported, postsecondary education for a student with an intellectual disability.

    Credit Requirements:

    • 4 credits AAS: English 
    • 4 credits AAS: Math 
    • 4 credits AAS: Science 
    • 4 credits AAS: Social Studies 
    • 1 credit Beginning Kinesiology (P.E.) with Adaptive P.E. offered as needed
    • 1 credit AAS: Life Skills aligned with Health for one semester
    • 1 credit AAS: Life Skills aligned with Career Preparedness
    • 1 credit AAS: Life Skills
    • 1 credit AAS: Prevocational
    • 1 credit AAS: Vocational
    • 1 credit AAS: Community-Based Instruction
    • All remaining credits earned count toward the elective credit requirement.
    • A minimum of 24 total earned credits are required per the Alabama State Department of Education.

St. Clair County Endorsements

 

The St. Clair County School system has established three local endorsements to the Alabama High School Diploma. Students are not required to complete the requirements for an endorsement.

  • Advanced Academic Endorsement – This endorsement is only available to students on the General Pathway.
  • Advanced Career Technical Endorsement – This endorsement is only available to students on the General Pathway.
  • Career Technical Endorsement – This endorsement is available to students on either the General Pathway or the Workforce Pathway.
  • To receive the Advanced Academic Endorsement, students must meet all requirements for the Alabama High School Diploma – General Pathway/Option A plus:

    • Math – one course must be above and beyond Algebra II with Statistics
    • 2 credits World Language – must complete 2 credits of the same language
    • 3 credits of AP core courses or 3 credits of Dual Enrollment core courses or a combination of 3 credits in either AP or Dual Enrollment core courses

    Students who complete the requirements for the Advanced Academic Endorsement with a GPA of 4.0 or higher will be named Honor Graduates. The St. Clair County Schools Student/Parent Information Guide and Code of Conduct provides details of the criteria for Honor Graduates.

  • To receive the Advanced Career Technical Endorsement, students must meet all requirements for the Alabama High School Diploma – General Pathway/Option A and the requirements for an Advanced Academic Endorsement plus:

    • Be a Career Technical Program Completer as defined by St. Clair County Schools which includes successfully completing at least 3 credits under a Career Technical Program with a minimum average of 70 in each course and have earned the credential that is part of that program.

    Students who complete the requirements for the Advanced Career Technical Endorsement with a GPA of 4.0 or higher will be named Honor Graduates. The St. Clair County Schools Student/Parent Information Guide and Code of Conduct provides details of the criteria for Honor Graduates.

  • To receive the Career Technical Endorsement, students must meet all requirements for the Alabama High School Diploma – General Pathway/Option A or Workforce Pathway/Option B plus:

    • Be a Career Technical Program Completer as defined by St. Clair County Schools which includes successfully completing at least 3 credits under a Career Technical Program with a minimum average of 70 in each course and have earned the credential that is part of that program.

College and Career Ready Indicators

Effective for students of the graduating Class of 2026 who entered Grade 9 for the first time during the 2022-2023 school year, the Alabama High School Diploma: General Education Pathway shall be issued to students who earn the required credits and earn one or more of the following college and career readiness indicators:

  • Earning a benchmark score in any subject area on the ACT® college entrance exam.
  • Earning a qualifying score of three or higher on an Advanced Placement® exam.
  • Earning college credit while in high school.
  • Earning a Silver or higher level on the ACT® WorkKeys® Exam.
  • Attaining Career and Technical Education (CTE) completer status.
  • Earning a career technical industry credential listed on the compendium of valuable credentials of the Alabama Committee on Credential Quality and Transparency (ACCQT).
  • Completing an ALSDE-approved computer science course.
  • Being accepted into the military before graduation.
  • Completing an in-school youth apprenticeship program.
  • Earning a qualifying score of four or higher on an International Baccalaureate® exam.
  • Any additional College and Career Readiness (CCR) indicator approved by the Alabama State Board of Education.

Except for students who are pursuing the Alabama High School Diploma: Essentials Pathway or the Alabama High School Diploma: Alternate Achievement Standards (AAS) Pathway, no student shall receive the Alabama High School Diploma: General Education Pathway without earning one or more of the college and career readiness indicators. Any student not receiving the Alabama High School Diploma: General Education Pathway, who later becomes in compliance, may only receive the Alabama High School Diploma: General Education Pathway if the remedy occurs within the two years of their initial failure to graduate.
